Tarmac Challenge for FASTRON World Rally Team
After a three month break, the FASTRON  World Rally Team of Rifat Sungkar and Scott Beckwith returns to Europe on August 24-26 for the all tarmac 9th round of the 2012 World Rally Championship – Rally Germany. Based in the ancient city of Trier, and with world renowned stages through the vineyards of the Mosel region, and the German Army Tank testing ground, this is a rally with a reputation.  The event is a classic combination of tight narrow tarmac roads through the vines, and the concrete roads of the Panzerplatte, famous for its massive concrete blocks on the side of the road which can catch out the best drivers, bringing their event to a very sudden stop – and doing major damage to their cars!

For the FASTRON  Word Rally Team, this is new ground.  Sungkar noted that “Whilst I have driven a rally car on concrete roads before – China last year was over 50% concrete – this event sees us in a tarmac spec car – so it has much lower suspension, and tarmac tyres.  Its probably closer to driving a circuit car – but of course these are country roads with no gravel traps and Armco barriers!  So for sure, we will be learning every step of the way – and of course the surface change from tarmac in the vineyards, to concrete in the testing ground, and what that might mean to car set up – are all things we will have to learn quickly and adapt to”

These new challenges are exactly what the team enjoys.  Co-driver Beckwith commented “We came to the WRC specifically looking to broaden our experience in different countries, on different roads, and with different challenges.  It has already been a massive learning curve for us both this year – I think it is easy to underestimate just what a challenge the WRC is – the longer events testing the crews stamina and endurance in every respect.  And for an Indonesian based team, the travel has a big impact too.  So, this is another new challenge, but one we are looking forward to – and we hope to walk away from this weekend with both a good result for the team, and a heap of experience!”

The team are also excited about testing the limits of the Symtech prepared Subaru WRX ST12 on tarmac.  “The car needed some sorting out, particularly after Portugal, where it really did not suit us” said Sungkar.  “But it was significantly better in Greece, and our team are both experienced on tarmac, and have had 3 months to fine tune it – so we should have a strong car that we can push as our confidence grows over the weekend.”

“Our aim is to do our best as always” said Sungkar “and to carry the pride of all Indonesians as we compete on the world stage.  This is a passion we share with our sponsor , Pertamina, and are very grateful for their support.” [AS]
